Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw

Lolita’s Personality

They are prone to becoming bored and will find other ways to entertain themselves if their owners aren't interacting with them enough. Macaws that are not properly socialized may become aggressive and may even bite. It is important that boundaries are clearly established so that the macaw doesn't feel threatened.
In general, Blue and Gold Macaws are lively birds who are fond of playing, climbing and interact. They require at least 2 to 3 hours each day outside their cages for physical exercise and mental stimulation. They enjoy playing games, learning tricks and listening to music. They also enjoy playing in parks and playgrounds while hiking, and also visiting local bars and restaurants. They are not only a great pet but also a wonderful companion for children.
These birds can be very loud, despite their love for their mate. They can also be a nuisance to those who live nearby. They are capable of loud, ear-splitting calls and screech-calls which can be a nuisance in condos and apartments or in close proximity to children who might be scared by their noise.
This species is also monomorphic. Males and females can be difficult to distinguish. Because of this, DNA testing is the only reliable method to determine sex. Once sex is established, pairing the birds can be attempted and breeding can begin.
Blue and Gold Macaws, like all pets require training to learn commands and phrases. It is a lengthy process, and the pet's owner has to be patient and understand that this is a challenging task. Positive reinforcement can help speed up the process, and help correct any behavior issues.
Lolita's Care
Since the 1960s, activists have pleaded for Lolita to retire from performing tricks in Miami Seaquarium. They also have urged her to be relocated into an open-water pen. After the 1993 hit movie Free Willy stirred public outrage for orca Keiko's return to the wild, marine biologists hoped Lolita might have a similar fate. Unfortunately, she never got the chance to go back to the sea.
The captors of Lolita, referred to as the Dolphin Company, have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her at risk. They harm her health by forcing her to perform for tourists, overexerting her with high-speed circles and head-first dives that expose her to chlorine, causing her to lose weight and harming her immune system. They also keep her in a tank that is one-and-a-half times smaller her natural habitat.
Fortunately, in 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with a group of Lolita advocates called Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe, who consider her to be a family member, on a plan to eventually transport her to open water. The plan included a sanctuary pen in Washington's westcoast where she could spend the rest of her days and receive human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen would be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home, and would be surrounded by the ocean itself and not an actual concrete tank.
If the plan had been successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive. In the wild, killer whales are social animals who bond with their families until they die. Lolita who has been alone at Seaquarium in a secluded area for over 40 years, is now being released into the wild. Many activists across the country have demanded Lolita's departure from Seaquarium and her eventual release into the wild. These activists include Ric O'Barry, a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

Lolita's Diet
Like any species of animal captive, a blue and gold macaw's health is based on a healthy diet. These beautiful birds require high-quality food, as well as plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. In captivity, a well-fed macaw can expect to live up to 60 years. In addition, this majestic bird needs plenty of room to fly around and exercise.

Miami Seaquarium, and in particular Lolita is being criticized over the quality of food that they feed to their killer whales. The 57-year-old orca was rescued from Puget Sound in 1970, and even though the species is endangered in the wild, she is in an aquarium that some say is too small for her.
Lolita's Health
Lolita is beautiful, however her health is declining. She's been a source of concern for animal welfare organizations who would like to see her returned to the wild. Lolita is a resident of the Miami Seaquarium since 1970 and was a tourist attraction for decades. She has been fighting chronic illnesses and an infection that has left her in a fragile state.
The Dolphin Company, which now is the owner of the Miami Seaquarium and is owned by the Dolphin Company has not provided any information regarding the condition of Lolita. Friends of Toki, a non-profit group, has posted monthly updates on her health and well-being on their website. They have shown that she is ageing quickly and that her health is deteriorating.
Since her captor does not have to divulge this information, it's unclear which specific health issues the orca is suffering from. The Orca Project created a repository of necropsies from Sea World. This shows that kidney disease often plays an important factor in the death of orcas kept in captivity.
Despite the health issues that continue to plague of Lolita, many people believe that she could be closer than ever before to living a wild life. The new owner of Seaquarium has stated his commitment to relocate the whale from her tank to her natural waters in the Pacific.
After years of public pressure from PETA and others, the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a seaside sanctuary where she can swim deep in the water and perhaps be reconnect with her orca mother. Sadly these plans came late for the beloved whale, who died on Friday from what was believed to be a kidney issue.
